Fiberoptic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)

Fiberoptic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is a procedure used to assess swallowing function and identify any abnormalities or difficulties that may be present. It involves the use of a flexible fiberoptic endoscope, which is a thin tube with an attached camera and light source that can be passed through the nose and into the throat. During a FEES procedure, a Speech-Language Pathologist (S-LP) inserts the endoscope through the nostril and positions it in a way that allows for a clear view of the structures involved in swallowing, such as the larynx, pharynx, and esophagus. The S-LP then observes the swallowing process in real-time as the patient consumes various food and liquid consistencies.
